BURNT BY THE SUN
While watching an extreme weather event in American TV, my 10 year old son asked me, “What if the sun goes out?’ We discussed the reality of this and then I asked him, what happens if our soul, our 'human sun' goes out? Inspired by this conversation and the story of Icarus, I began this series "Burnt by the Sun.' In Greek mythology, son of the inventor Daedalus who perished by flying too close to the Sun with waxen wings. Using a conceptual approach, the series was photographed on an aeroplane, at the Johannesburg Zoo, a Chinese New Year celebration, and a school night fun run around a track lit by ultraviolet light. Portraits in ultraviolet light have an apocalyptic, otherworldly feel, everything looks reversed, like a photographic negative. With artificial intelligence, is our humaness being negated? Are we sacrificing humans for progress and efficiency? How is AI changing the way we relate to each other and to ourselves? What does the youth face? With the existential threats of climate change and AI, are the youth angry and anxious about the world they have inherited?
